Unlearning and Learning

By the time you read this blog, we will have celebrated Epiphany ( the wise men who finally found the Christ child). They knelt, offered gifts, and worshiped God in a manger. Isn't it strange the shepherds came to Bethlehem without getting lost, but the wise were lost?

In our life's journey, there are many moments when we are lost and try to find our way back to a place of clarity, comfort, and peace. We will find ourselves secure in God's hands when we can unlearn what we have learned.

The wise men ended up in the wrong place because they relied on what they already knew and could not learn anything new. Why? They were not listeners. For us to listen to God's voice, we may want to listen to God's messengers who come to us in many ways. Listening is difficult because we cling to our old ways as settled truths and do not want to be challenged by new possibilities. How do we break from our old ways to embrace God's newness?

  • Examine why we resist listening to new possibilities.
  • Do an inventory of what we would lose by unlearning and learning.
  • Are we holding on to many unnecessary aspects in our lives that keep us from seeing the new life that Christ offers?

Unlearn, listen, learn, let go, receive, and we may find our way back to where God wants us to be.

God, may I find moments of clarity today. Amen
