The Christmas story has a lot of movement, talking, and singing. The Angels sing, and Mary responds; Shepards tell each other they should go to Bethlehem. The one person who does not have a speaking part in the Christmas story is Joseph. He is a silent participant in an evolving story.
Joseph remained silent because he was having trouble with Mary expecting a child when they were only engaged. Joseph even considered breaking the engagement. Even though he did not fully agree with what was happening, he did not resist; he silently participated.
Sometimes, we may face a situation that may not be agreeable because change often meets our resistance. Change is not easy to accept, let alone fully participate. Joseph chose not to resist but silently participate because he knew something more significant than what meets his likes and dislikes was about to happen. If he had protested because change is not easy to accept, he would not have been in Bethlehem.
Sometimes, silence may be our path to Bethlehem. Joseph never spoke but was present and participated.
Merry Christmas!
